London has a well-earned reputation for being one of the world's most expensive cities. Yet it's also one of the most popular. That's probably because this city on the Thames River has something for everybody at every price level. It's a simple matter of having know-how—what Londoners call "nous" (rhymes with house)—to find what's free, cheap, and a good value regardless of cost.
From humble beginnings as a Roman river crossing to its standing among the world's largest and most important cities, London has seen it all. It has endured sackings by Vikings; conquests by Jutes, Angles, Saxons, and Normans; several great fires; and a civil war. Evidence of its multi-layered history is everywhere, from the bits of Roman wall visible in the financial district to the Tower of London, the narrow medieval lanes and passageways of the Inner Temple, and the great Georgian and Victorian museums of Britain's Age of Empire.
